SIU2020 How-to Guides and Information

How to create your SIU2020 Account

In order to start using SIU2020, Members must first register into the SIU2020 system, add contact details, personal information, certifications and course information. The following steps will help you navigate getting your SIU2020 account set up. You can also click the link to watch our video walkthrough.

  1. The first step is checking your email for an invitation from SIU2020 to register and set up your new account. If you don’t see this email invitation in your inbox, please reach out to an SIU dispatcher and they will be able to send you a new invitation email.
  2. Once you see the email invitation in your inbox, please click the highlighted text ‘accept invitation’ to be taken to the SIU2020 website.
  3. Once you’ve clicked on the link in the invitation email, you will be taken to the SIU2020 webpage and asked to set your password. Be sure to create a strong password and do not share your password with anyone else.
  4. After setting your password, you will be prompted to fill out information to create your profile. Please follow the steps on the website and input as much information as possible. The first step in creating your profile will ask for your SIU Union Membership information, along with contact details and personal information.
  5. You will then move onto the second step in the profile creation process, which asks Members to input information and upload pictures of documents, including your medical certificate, passport, and any relevant courses and certificates.
  6. To upload a picture of your documents, Members will need to have documents in hand and will need to take a picture of the documents using your smart phone using the camera application found on your phone. You will need to leave SIU2020 to take a picture. Once the picture is taken, please return to SIU2020 and click ‘upload file’ and upload the picture of the relevant document.
  7. For help uploading documents, we’ve included a separate guide below. If you are still having trouble, please reach out to an SIU dispatcher at your Union Hall.
  8. Once you have gone through the steps to create your profile and you have uploaded all necessary documentation, your profile will now be complete, and you will be ready to use SIU2020.
  9. After you have completed your profile, you will be able to access the SIU2020 ‘Menu’ which will allow you to update any personal information, upload any new documents or certificates and check on registrations and job calls.

How to upload a document to SIU2020

SIU Members will frequently need to update their SIU2020 profile with new courses, certificates, or medical documents over time. To make this process as simple as possible, we’ve put together the below guide to help Members learn how to upload a new document to their profile in SIU2020.

  1. Before you get started, make sure you have the documents you want to upload at the ready.
  2. The best way to prepare to upload a document to SIU2020 is to take a picture of your document(s) with your phone before logging into the platform.
  3. Login to your SIU2020 account after taking pictures of the document(s) you want to upload. Go to https://siu2020.seafarers.ca/users/sign_in . You can also find a link to login to SIU2020 at the top right of our main website (seafarers.ca) .
  4. Once you are logged in to SIU2020, click on ‘menu’ and then choose the type of document you wish to upload. You can select from ‘Documents’, ‘MED Courses’ and ‘Certificates’. If you have multiple different kinds of documents to upload you will need to do them each separately. Please note that to upload a copy of your passport, that section is located in your personal information, not in your documents section.
  5. After selecting the type of document you wish to upload, you will be asked to fill in the appropriate information regarding your document or certificate. You can then upload a photo of your document by clicking ‘upload file’.
  6. After clicking upload file, this should then open the pictures section of your phone. You will need to click on the photo of your document that you wish to upload.
  7. After successfully uploading your document and filling in the information, scroll to the bottom of the page and click ‘next’ or ‘save’. You have now uploaded a document to SIU2020! If you have further documents to upload, repeat the steps above.

How job calls work

Video – SIU2020: How job calls work

SIU2020 is the SIU Canada’s online hiring hall. It allows members to view job postings, submit their interest in available jobs, and be considered during scheduled job calls.

Important Job Call Times

Job calls take place twice daily:

  • 10:00 a.m. EST
  • 3:00 p.m. EST (15:00)

Check your e-mail

  • Prior to the job call times, you will receive an email from SIU2020 indicating what jobs will be called at the upcoming job call. Please keep in mind that this will show only the jobs at the Hall where you are registered. It is possible that jobs could be transferred from other Halls if they go unfilled which you did not see in the e-mail.

Step 1: Log In to SIU2020

  1. Visit the SIU2020 platform.
  2. Log in using your member credentials.
  3. Update your profile if necessary
  4. Once logged in, check the registration board by clicking ‘registrations’ under the hiring hall tab.

Step 2: Check Registration Board

  1. The registration board will confirm if you are registered or not – if not, contact the Union Hall that you are registered with.
  2. You will also see where you are positioned on the registration board among your fellow members. The higher on the board you are, the higher your priority to secure a job during a job call. Priority is based on the lowest serially number registration – For more information, refer to the SIU Canada ‘National Shipping Rules’.

Step 3: Wait for Job Calls

  1. Job Calls take place at 10:00 and 15:00 EST on weekdays.
  2. Job calls are displayed daily at 9:40 and 14:40 and open for applications at 10:00 and 15:00 when job calls commence.

Step 4: Throwing in for a Job

  1. The ‘Live Job Calls’ page will automatically refresh at 10:00 and 15:00 EST with any new opportunities
  2. SIU2020 will cycle through the available jobs one at a time, giving members 1 minute and 30 seconds to apply for each available job.
  3. Jobs are awarded according to SIU shipping rules and seniority – you can check your priority on the registration board.
  4. Once the call is complete, the system updates the job status and the next job call is automatically conducted.

Note: Members can view the open job calls and apply at any time. Open job calls are the jobs that were not filled during regular job calls and are therefore open for anyone to apply.

Step 5: Check Results

  1. If you are successful in applying for a job during a job call, the dispatcher will then propose you to the employer. If the employer confirms you, you will be given a dispatch slip, which can be found in the ‘dispatch slips’ section of SIU2020.
  2. If you are not awarded the job, you remain eligible to throw in for future postings.

Step 6: Reporting In after Job Completion

Once you have completed your assignment and have finished your job on board your vessel, it is very important that you log on to SIU2020 to ‘report in’ in order to maintain your registration with the Union. If you do not ‘report in’ you will not be able to apply for future positions unless you re-register.

Key Reminders

  • Always check SIU2020 before 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. EST for new postings.
  • Make sure your profile and documents are up to date.
  • Throwing in for a job does not guarantee placement, all jobs are awarded according to established rules and you must be approved by the employer before the process is complete.
  • If you are struggling and need any assistance with SIU2020, contact the Union Hall you are registered with and an SIU Representative will help you.

How to 'report in'

Once you have completed your assignment and have finished your job on board your vessel, it is very important that you log on to SIU2020 to ‘report in’ in order to maintain your registration with the Union, if that registration is still valid within the National Shipping Rules. If you do not ‘report in’ you will not be able to apply for future positions unless you re-register. In accordance with the National Shipping Rules, a member has seven (7) days in which to report in through the virtual hiring hall and must provide the necessary documents to establish that the relief job was properly completed.

  • To report in, members can navigate to ‘report in’ under the ‘hiring hall’ section in the SIU2020 main menu panel.
  • Members will then be asked to upload a copy of your discharge book by taking a picture or scanning your discharge book and clicking ‘upload file’.
  • If you do not report in after finishing your assignment and disembarking your ship, you risk losing your registration and will need to re-register with the Union dispatcher, losing your registration priority.

Fairness and Transparency

The SIU Canada’s virtual hiring hall, SIU2020, is made to strictly adhere to the SIU Canada National Shipping Rules. The system is designed to automatically adhere to these rules strictly, creating a fair and transparent system where jobs are awarded as they should be – Priority is based on the lowest serially number registration. You can see where you rank by looking at the registration board viewable on SIU2020.

Members are encouraged to review the SIU Canada National Shipping Rules if they would like to be more familiar with the fairness of the system. All SIU Canada members are sent a copy of the National Shipping Rules when becoming a member. Members can also obtain a copy by reaching out to the Union Hall that they are registered with.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ):

Q: I haven’t received an email to register for SIU2020, what do I do?

A: If you haven’t received an email from SIU2020 to set up your account, please call an SIU representative at the Union Hall you are registered with, and we will ensure a new email from SIU2020 is sent to you.

Q: What is SIU2020?

A: SIU2020 is the Union’s online system that includes the virtual hiring hall. It allows members to manage their profile, take part in job calls, throw in for jobs, and report back in online instead of having to be physically present at a Union Hall.

Q: What are the National Shipping Rules

A: The National Shipping Rules are the rules and regulations that have dictated how job calls are conducted for decades, which were recently updated to account for virtual shipping through SIU2020. The National Shipping Rules are sent to each SIU Canada member when they became a member of the Union and members are encouraged to review the Shipping Rules to understand how shipping through the SIU Canada works. The Shipping Rules create a fair and transparent system for Members to trust.

Q: Are the Shipping Rules changing

A: The Shipping Rules themselves are not changing. SIU2020 follows the same rules that have always applied. Seniority, eligibility, and job priority all remain the same.

Q: Do I need to participate at 10:00EST and 3:00EST to throw in for a job?

A: Members will still need to actively participate in job calls at 10:00EST and 3:00EST. The difference is that participation now happens through SIU2020 instead of in person or by phone.

Q: What if I don’t understand the system or I’m not good with computers?

A: Help is available. SIU representatives can assist if you have questions or run into issues. We also recommend reviewing the how-to guides and videos on the website first, as they walk through everything step by step.

Q: What if something goes wrong with the system?

A: There may be a short adjustment period once all features are live. If you experience an issue, don’t panic. Let us know so it can be addressed. The dispatcher still oversees the process and can intervene if needed.

Q: Who do I contact if I encounter issues with SIU2020?
