SIU Canada Celebrates International Day of the Seafarer 2023

The Seafarers’ International Union of Canada (SIU) wishes a happy Day of the Seafarer 2023 to all our hardworking Sisters and Brothers in the SIU Canada and dedicated seafarers around the world. The International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) focus for this year’s Day of the Seafarer is the critical role seafarers’ play in protecting the marine environment while at sea. Members of the SIU Canada know the importance of protecting the communities in which they work and take great pride in participating in efforts to reduce harmful emissions in the marine sector and across global supply chains.

The SIU Canada commends the advances being made by companies and organizations who are committed to making the operation of all vessels more sustainable. On Day of the Seafarer 2023, we remind government and industry that seafarers’ health and safety must be at the forefront when considering new technologies and alternative fuels meant to reduce harmful emissions. Adequate education and training for seafarers is critical to a Just Transition to greener shipping. Sustainable shipping and workers’ health and safety must advance at an equal pace.

On the Day of the Seafarer 2023, we celebrate the often-overlooked seafarers and highlight the importance of workers’ voices at every level of decision-making for a healthier and safer future for all.

The SIU Canada has compiled the below images of our members to help put a face to these hardworking seafarers who serve communities across the country.
