In the coming weeks, SIU2020 will receive important updates that will make the virtual hiring hall fully functional. These changes are designed to modernize the hiring process while continuing to follow the same Shipping Rules that ensure fairness and transparency for all members.
Below is a brief overview of what members can expect.
Soon, members will be able to fully participate in the hiring hall through SIU2020.
This includes the ability to:
Everything that previously required being physically present at a Union Hall can now be done through SIU2020.
Along with these updates, the Union will be returning to regular shipping under the National Shipping Rules.
While shipping had been conducted by phone since the pandemic, members will now actively participate in job calls at 10:00 am and 3:00 pm EST through SIU2020. Instead of receiving a phone call, members will log in to view and throw in for jobs they are registered and qualified for.
SIU2020 removes the need to travel to a Union Hall, pay for accommodations, or be physically present during job calls. Members can participate using their phone, laptop, or tablet from home, on the road, or anywhere else.
Members will also be able to view “open call” jobs, which are positions that go unfilled during regular job calls. These jobs can be viewed and bid on at any time while they remain available.
While the system is new, the rules are not.
The Union Hall Dispatcher continues to oversee the process. Human oversight remains in place, and dispatchers can review and override the system if needed.
We understand that this change may take some getting used to, especially for members who joined since 2020.
Union representatives are available to help with any questions or issues you may encounter. If you need assistance, members can contact Richard Lynch, Montreal Dispatcher at rlynch@seafarers.ca or by phone at (514) 931-7859.
The most important step members should take now is to ensure their SIU2020 profile is set up and up to date, including uploading digital copies of any certificates and licences you hold, along with ensuring your correct email address is on file.
Having a complete profile helps ensure a smooth process once the virtual hiring hall goes live and allows you to become familiar with the system ahead of time.
