The Sailor

The final issue of The Canadian Sailor for 2024 reflects on the past year for SIU Canada, highlighting historic strides made for women in our union and the significant changes and advancements undertaken to improve the lives of all members. This issue also addresses the growing attacks on the right to strike for unionized workers across the country and our ongoing fight to defend this fundamental right.

The September 2024 issue of The Canadian Sailor discusses the recent changes made to the National Shipping Rules, allowing for the advancement and implementation of our virtual hiring hall system, SIU2020. This issue also provides a variety of updates on many ongoing negotiations with different units within the SIU Canada.

The June 2024 issue of The Canadian Sailor includes information about the recent changes to the SIU Canada Constitution, which were voted on by the membership at the end of June. This issue also provides updates on many of the ongoing negotiations and recently struck agreements by many units within the Union.

The March 2024 issue of The Canadian Sailor discussed the publication of the SIU Canada’s survey and subsequent report on the issue of harassment within the Canadian marine sector. This issue of The Sailor also includes information regarding various ongoing collective bargaining challenges facing our Members.

The December 2023 Issue of The Canadian Sailor looks back on the year that was, and the numerous gains that SIU Canada members and Canadian seafarers as a whole were able to achieve this year. The SIU Canada looks forward to another strong year ahead in 2024!

The September 2023 issue of The Canadian Sailor covers the recent decision by the Union to survey the membership on issues of harassment, bullying and sexual harassment at sea. The SIU also celebrates a major contract win for Members with Algoma Central Corporation.

The June 2023 issue of The Canadian Sailor celebrates International Day of the Seafarer, discusses important topics to SIU members, like Transport Canada signing reciprocal agreements with various countries and informs members of the varying work being done by your Union officials. We also say goodbye to Brother Mike Lucarz.

The March 2023 Issue of The Canadian Sailor marks the start of a new year for SIU Canada members. Your Union is hard at work outlining priorities for the new year, with a focus on ensuring the future of seafaring in Canada is strong and prosperous for generations to come.

This Special Issue of The Canadian Sailor covers the recent election of the new SIU Canada Executive Board, featuring an interview with the new SIU Canada President, Michael Given, along with biographies for all newly elected Executive Board members. We also wish a well deserved retirement to Brother Jim Given and Brother Patrice Caron.
