SIU Canada Stands in Solidarity Against U.S. Trade War Measures

The Seafarers’ International Union of Canada (SIU) is calling for national unity and worker solidarity in response to the escalating trade war between Canada and the United States. U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a 25% tariff on most Canadian exports to the U.S. and 10% on Canadian energy, set to take effect on Tuesday, February 4, 2025.

The fact that President Trump has continued to demonstrate a fundamental misunderstanding of tariffs, falsely claiming they “tax” Canada, is enough reason to believe that this is nothing more than a strong-arm tactic by an insecure bully. In reality, these tariffs are imposed on U.S. businesses that import Canadian goods—and ultimately, American consumers will also bear a significant burden by these increased costs. The impacts on these tariffs will be felt by working families on both sides of the border.

The SIU Canada is encouraged by the swift and united response from Canada’s provinces and territories, who have all agreed with the federal government’s plan to enact retaliatory tariffs on American imports. As a nation, we must stand firm in the face of these reckless economic attacks and refuse to be intimidated by the bullying tactics of the insecure leader to our south.

We urge all SIU Canada members—and all Canadians—to support domestic industries by choosing Canadian-made products whenever possible. At a time when our economy is being unfairly targeted, this is one of the most direct ways that individuals can push back. Every dollar spent on Canadian goods strengthens our economy, supports Canadian workers, and sends a clear message that we will stand united.

While it is disheartening to see such divisive leadership from our closest trading partner, Canadians must not waver. Our nation has a long history of resilience, and we have faced economic challenges before. We will weather this storm just as we always have—by standing together.

The SIU Canada is actively monitoring the situation and will continue to stand up for our members and all Canadian workers affected by these reckless policies. We are in close communication with industry leaders, government officials, and labour partners to ensure that our voices are heard and that Canadian jobs are protected.

SIU Canada members know that in times of uncertainty, our solidarity is our greatest strength. We will continue to fight for fair treatment, economic justice, and a future where workers are not collateral damage in political games. No matter what challenges come our way, Canada is not a nation to be pushed around. We are a strong, united people—and together, we will emerge from this stronger than ever.
